GEOGRAPHY
The
city of Huamachuco, capital of Sánchez Carrión
province, is located
on the
highlands
of
La Libertad
region, in the north of Peru. Huamachuco is
at 3150 meters above sea level, 180km. far from Trujillo (capital of the
region) and 700 km. far from Lima (capital of Peru).
The
main activities of the province are the agriculture and the mining. Here, it is mainly cultivated potato and corn. In mining, it is extracted gold, silver, and coal. The
population of Sánchez Carrión is approximately 125,000 people and that
of Huamachuco approximately 20,000. Therefore, it is a rural area. Nearly 64% of the population is less than 25 years old. The National Institute for Statistics and Information, has defined a poverty line for the region as 60 US$/month. According to this definition, 70% of the population of the province live in poverty (most people live with US $2 or less per day). NATURAL ATTRACTIONS
